Software Release : Testament v3.0

For those that are not aware, God was the first Software Engineer in the Universe. Note, how he was able to release two versions of the same crappy testament software and still convince people to use it…

Anyway, I bring news about a release that will probably be announced soon enough (although people have told that there has been going on a closed beta of this already running in some communities):

Testament v3.0 release, changelog:
- Bug Fixes on some paragraphs that generated too much discussion and led some people to use open source Science v1.34beta software;
- Inclusion of support for Gay relations;
– Which includes the removal of all paragraphs related to gay hatred;
– and some chapters including detailed stories about gay relationships Jesus might have had during his life;

Users of version 2.0 (codename New Testament) are recommended that they upgrade to this version (codename Brand New Testament) as soon as possible since support for this version will cease in the coming months (which means prayers will stop being answered to people using this version).

An Honest, Concise Opinion on Female Mutilation…

Well, sometimes you are lucky enough to have an honest friend which tells you what they really think by expressing themselves as openly as possible.

One of my friends (which shall remain anonymous) watched a TV documentary regarding the Koran and besides a lot of questions that the documentary raised, it also raised the following comment on female mutilation that I found delicious:

OMG, there is just a show about the Koran on TV… Very interesting!
They discussed female genital mutilation where they told that 97% of girls in Egypt have to experience that – Fuck Them!!!
They say that with female mutilation (circumcision), the women don’t run around and fuck with all the men… But how about the men??? They are not mutilated… How about cutting their balls off???

My friend also provided with an online reference for female circumcision in Egypt.

Thank you for this paragraph of pure honesty… When I think about the subject, my thoughts are similar but it is hard for me to put it out as well as you did!

ICFP 2008 After 10 Hours

The 10 Hours have passed. The result is an unfinished C++ implementation of a rover. In fact, all I did in the 10 hours was the supporting framework for the rover.
Its features are:

  • Connection to server;
  • Parsing of messages from server;
  • Wrapper for sending well-formed messages to server;
  • Messages are converted into world objects that can be added to world state;
  • Launches two threads, one to receive messages from server and another one to control the server based on the current state continuously modified by the first thread;

An hourly update is as follows:

  1. Reading of problem description and implemention of the socket for server connection;
  2. Message Keeping structures;
  3. Decision about initial rover strategy (described later on) and implementation of threads;
  4. Finished handling threads;
  5. Creation of world object structures;
  6. Parsing of messages into object structures;
  7. Finished parsing messages into object structures;
  8. Starting implementation of state-based strategy;
  9. Reverting implementation into a stateless strategy;
  10. Initial implementation of a stateless strategy;

The strategy which initially I thought I had time to implement based on state would require the implementation of a QuadTree structure and some path-finding algorithms also in order to reuse information used in previous turns. As the time was not enough I reverted into a simple stateless strategy where the rover purely reacted to its vision environment:

  • Can I see a Martian? If yes, run like hell AWAY from them.
  • Do I see a Boulder or Crater in path? If yes, then turn to the best side depending on obstacle position.
  • Is homebase in current path? If no, then turn to the best side in order to have homebase in path as soon as possible.

This was ultimately the strategy I decided to follow and still no time was enough. Although sad that I couldn’t dedicate the whole weekend to it I still did a few things and had loads of fun. The implementation was all git-kept and a tarballed for future reference. (if for some reason you cannot access the tarball, let me know).

Crack the Cracker!

Well, for those of you coming late to the cracker story that is infuriating a bunch of lunatic, extremist, fanatic, religious maniacs, I am sorry but I won’t tell it for you. However, I will reference it…

It all started in a church (where else?) where Webster Cook took a Eucharist (the white cracker thingy) to show his friend.

Fanatics handled this as if it was a hostage situation.

After so many stories, PZ Meyers a biologist and fellow atheist wrote his is blog that after all this is a Frackin’ Cracker. Along with several references which you should follow to read the full stories.

Obviously it didn’t take long for the Catholic League people to reply and I quote the most irritating bit:

“It is hard to think of anything more vile than to intentionally desecrate the Body of Christ. We look to those who have oversight responsibility to act quickly and decisively.”

These people are decided to ruin PZ Meyers life also (yeah, because Webster Cook is already in bad sheets). Given the fanatics asked for people to contact President of University of Minesotta Robert H. Bruininks, PZ Meyers along with the RichardDawkins.net retaliate by asking you to do the same.

I have done my share and wrote an email to the President of the University of Minesotta which follows:

Dear President Robert Bruininks,

It is with the utmost respect that I am sending you this short email
(because I understand your time is not much) in support of PZ Meyers.
I am a Portuguese PhD student in the University of Southampton, UK
which regularly reads PZ Meyers blog along with several other science
blogs in the blogosphere.

It is with deep regret that I have read the Catholic League post that follows:

Although I don’t know PZ Meyers personally, but being a frequent
reader of his blog and knowing the details of this story not only
through the media but also the blogosphere I have to share you with my
opinion.

PZ Meyers in his post

was objective and stated his personal views on the situation along
with a sarcastic comment regarding his attitude against crackers. It
is obviously an extremist attitude from the part of the Catholic
League of trying to sack this good man and scientist for his personal
views. We are in the 21st century where reason should rule. And if
reason rules in the bottom of the issue we have a cracker which is
interpreted symbolically by a group of people and that’s it. Let them
do whatever they want with the cracker but please let PZ Meyers out of
his. If we let these people go ahead with their wishes, we are only
satisfying a group of extremists that will worsen their attitude
against people just to impose their will. Today they are joining
forces to bring a man down because of a cracker… what is then,
coming next?

This is a good man and doesn’t deserve to be treated like this. I hope
I can grow old reading PZ Meyers science stories.

I can’t really understand these religious fanatics or the way they speak just because of a tasteless cracker. After all of this, I wish we could do a cracker party where we could all desecrate one of these cookies. After all, they are tasteless and not even the blessing helps on giving it some flavour… I would be angry tought if people desecrated an Oreo… oh, I would me mad with that! :)

My take is… leave Webster Cook alone, leave PZ Meyers alone… this whole thing is just an amuzing stupidity by the religious idiots that see the body of a dead guy in a tasteless cookie… If you think critically about all of this you can just laugh at the christians and be sad that this is happen in plain 21st century!

ICFP in 10 Hours

As you all know, ICFP Contest started yesterday at 12.00 PDT. It is about a rover in Mars…

Unfortunately this year I am working in Lleida, Spain for a couple of weeks, including weekends, which means no ICFP Contest for me. However, I have decided to dedicate 10 hours (in 2 slots of 5 non-stop hours each) to the contest. So, today I will be working from 8.00pm to 1.00am and tomorrow the same and this year I will be programming in C++.

I will let you know what you can achieve in 10hours of C++ after the contest ends… Stay tuned!

Indocrination of Children in Religion

Indocrination : Teaching someone to accept doctrines uncritically

Indocrination of children into religion should be considered a crime and punished as such.

Although the different levels of indocrination may sometimes have light-years difference in their long term effects on children behaviour, all are bad and even those that advertise harmlessness should be avoided at all costs.

I, for example, was baptized as a child and even though no harm has been brought to me it did me no good either and can be seen as basically just a waste of time for the parents and the child.

Worse cases of indocrination [1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9] are not only a huge waste of children time but worse… they are a destructive agent of their personality hindering for ever many of the basic capabilities an adult should have.

Indocrination promotes segregation. In many religions children are not only separated by genres but also religion. They do not have the opportunity to socialize with people from different beliefs which would promote questioning and doubt, the essential foundations of our current civilization.

Indocrination promotes self-certainty. Children when left by themselves learn the right way, by observing, questioning and experimenting. Indocrination sets them prisioners of unproved, untested, unfounded and illogical beliefs. Makes them part of a society that doesn’t think, doesn’t ask and doesn’t care.

Indocrination promoted fear. Fear of forbidden things, fear of being observed by the great saviour that floats above us. Fear of talking and discussing what, as indocrinated, is sacred and should not be doubted.

Fear, self-certainty and segregation work circularly. Segregation doesn’t allow them to talk with others of different beliefs leading to lack of knowledge interchange, fear doesnt allow them to break the rules they were set to follow and cannot test or disprove, and self-certainty doesn’t allow them to ask themselves why they should have fear, why they should follow the rules or why these rules exist in the first place.

Nowhere people think, for example, that children should be indocrinated with their parents politics views. So, why religion? We let children grow first so that they can then make a wise, concious decision regarding politics. Why not the same for religion?

I would applause a parent, who while not indocrinating his child into their own religion, would accept his child when adult adopting beliefs contrary to their own.

My take, however, for the need for religion to be indocrinated instead of adopted is that children left to try the world on their own would live happily ever after without it. They would be the first to understand that religion is a land mine camp beneath a beautiful garden.

Religious indocrination is harmful, should be considered dangerous and avoided for the greater good of humanity!
